Staff members at a Vacaville prison are reaching out to the community with the hope of helping one of their own find a new kidney.
Katrina Porter, a 32-year-old supervising case records technician at California State Prison, Solano, has suffered from chronic kidney disease and diabetes since she was 16 years old, according prison spokeswoman Lt. Marlaina Dernoncourt.
Porter's disease has recently taken a turn for the worse, and she is scheduled to start dialysis in six weeks if she doesn't find a kidney donor, according to the statement.
Porter, a mother of six and newlywed, said has been referred to the University of California at Davis Medical Transplant Center.
Porter said she suffers from Vitamin D deficiency, has trouble getting around, is very weak at times and often has trouble keeping food down.
"I pray someone has it in their heart to save my life and donate a kidney, so that I can feel energetic and good again," Porter said in the statement. "I would love to have a long happy marriage with my husband and live to see my children grown into their adulthood."
