Local Moms Unite Under the Dixon Mothers' Club

From play dates, field trips and tips on motherhood - the Dixon Mothers' Club is a great resource for local moms.

It’s not often when a pair of Dixon mothers can break away from their busy regimens for some coffee and a chat – but recently I met with Laura Sullins and Kristina Bouyer, members of Dixon Mothers' Club to talk about the group.

Laura is a stay-at-home mother who takes care of her two young children – 18-month old Brooklyn joined us for our interview – and Kristina takes care of her two young daughters while working as a part-time nurse at Sutter Memorial Hospital.

Both women talked to me about why they joined the club.

Kristina, who serves as the club’s field trip coordinator, has been in the club for about three years, she said.

“My sister in law was involved in one where she lived and it was a way for me to meet other mothers and get ideas,” she said.

When her six-year-old daughter was younger, she said, it was difficult getting her to bed because of “monsters.” So another member of the Dixon Mothers' Club told Kristina about “Monster Spray,” a bottle filled with colored water to spray around the room before bedtime.

“We’d spray (and) it worked, until she started reading,” Kristina said with a smile.

Laura is the club’s membership coordinator and has been a Dixon Mothers' Club member for seven years. Laura came to know the club through word of mouth generated at , where she was part of a Mommy and Me group, she said.

“For me, I don’t have any family near and I found I can count on the other mothers,” she said. “It’s about supporting each other.”

Laura said when a new baby is born, the Dixon Mothers' Club comes together and helps the new mother – sometimes cooking for the mother and offering other household assistance.

But perhaps the biggest draw of the club, at least for Kristina and Laura, is the social aspect. Children often have play dates (once a week) and take field trips (about twice a month) to places such as the club favorite Kids Gone Wild in nearby Vacaville.

Children learn to socialize with each other, which helps prepare them for preschool or kindergarten. The group takes advantage of many of Dixon’s parks, setting up play dates, picnics and assorted fun events.

The Dixon Mothers' Club hosts fun mom’s night out events as well. Local moms sometimes meet at the home of another local mother for a book exchange, some wine and to enjoy each others' company.

While the club is primarily for mothers – Laura says the club has about 20 members in it –  the club also allows stay-at-home fathers to join as well. Members pays a yearly due of $36.

The club is preparing to celebrate its end-of-the-summer barbecue on Sunday, Sept. 11, and invites anyone who has an interest in becoming a member to join in on the fun.
