The Dixon Public Library (DPL) is a huge asset to the rich history in our town.
This is a photo, circa 1883, of the huge fire disaster that devastated downtown. The DPL explained on their Facebook page:
Spectators standing in Jackson Street looking east at devastation. The fire started in the Centennial Hotel at B and Jackson Streets on a windy evening and burned the block of business between First St and A and B Streets in one hour.
Buildings in background are on the east side of Main (First) Street. After the fire the City required all new buildings be built of masonry. DPL Archives 2005.6.81
