DFS Receives $20K to Provide Mental Health Services to Dixon's Uninsured

Dixon Family Services receives grant from Kaiser to provide care for people in Dixon who would otherwise go without.

Kaiser Permanente’s Napa-Solano Community Benefit Program recently awarded Dixon Family Services (DFS) a $20,000 grant to continue providing help to those who have no health coverage and no money to pay for it. For the fifth year Kaiser is supporting the DFS Continuum of Care Program.

“With this grant from Kaiser, Dixon Family Services is able to help clients who would otherwise go un-served.” said DFS Executive Director, Cookie Powell.  “We are so very fortunate to have them as our partner.”

Dixon Family Services is a non-profit social services agency and community-based Family Resource Center serving the community of Dixon and surrounding rural areas for close to 30 years. The agency will celebrate their 30 year anniversary of service to Dixon in 2014.

Dixon Family Services programs have grown over the years as the needs of people in Dixon increase and change to include: Substance Abuse Prevention/Early Intervention; Child Abuse Prevention/Early Intervention; Mental Health Services, School-based Mentoring and Counseling Support Groups, Parenting Classes, Individual Parent Education; Case Management, Homeless Assistance, Life Skills Workshops, Basic Needs Services, Application Assistance – for medical insurances, government benefits programs, rental assistance and utilities assistance programs; Employment Development; Senior Resources and Annual Senior Resource Fair; Volunteerism, Food Programs, Free Community Forums and Substance-Free Events, such as the Annual Community Block Party.

All services are provided in English and Spanish.

The primary objective of the Dixon Family Services Continuum of Care Program is to provide culturally competent mental health supportive services to those who have no health care or other resources.  Kaiser Permanente’s Community Benefit Program supports initiatives that seek to measurably improve health by addressing specific community health needs.

In the case of Dixon Family Services’ Mental Health Continuum Program, Kaiser Permanente supports efforts to lower financial barriers so the uninsured and underinsured gain access to quality care.

“Dixon Family Services is very appreciative that Kaiser Permanente recognizes the need and supports our efforts to increase availability of mental health services in our area,” said Powell. “History has shown that with increased poverty comes increased need for supportive services, due to depression, anxiety, stress, and substance abuse, to name a few.”
