Celebrate Cinco de Mayo at St. Peter Catholic Church

St. Peter Catholic Church to host its 15th Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration Sunday, May 1

The date was May 5, 1862 and a group of Mexican nationals were up against an invading French Army. The invaders were better equipped; but as history shows, not prepared for the fight and determination that the Mexican people brought to them.

The battle marked a victory for Mexico and to this day, Cinco de Mayo (May 5 in Spanish) signifies the spirit of the Mexican people and perhaps in a broader sense – brotherhood and camaraderie in the face of insurmountable odds. On Sunday May 1, that same feeling of camaraderie with flow through St. Peter Catholic Church during its 15th Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration.

The event is a family affair and will be highlighted by music, traditional Mexican dances, food and fun activities for the children. One thing that people will not find at this celebration is alcohol.

“It’s a free event, it’s a non-alcoholic event also,” said Irene Leal, one of the event’s many coordinators. “It’s mostly because it’s a family event, we want everybody to come.”

Even though Sunday, May 1, is not technically the day everyone celebrates Cinco de Mayo, organizers chose this Sunday in order to make way for the upcoming Dixon May Fair, which this year will be from May 4-8. This year, Bryan-Braker Funeral Home is set to sponsor the event, Leal said.

“We always have a great time and we’re excited to be getting help from Bryan-Braker Funeral Home,” she said in a prepared statement. “They are our first sponsors ever. We’re going to have a taco stand, an enchilada stand, a tamales food booth and a Mexican version of a hamburger.  All will be for sale at the event.  There will also be great games for the kids—fishing games, face painting and even painting contests. “

The fun begins at noon and goes until 8 p.m., Sunday, May 1, at the church located on 105 South 2nd St. Free and open to the public.
