Gomer School being reviewed by Solano County Board of Education’s 7-11 Advisory Committee

FAIRFIELD – The disposition of the Gomer School site in Fairfield’s Suisun Valley is the focus of the Solano County Board of Education’s newly appointed 7-11 Advisory Committee.

California Education Code section 17387 requires educational agencies to appoint a 7-11 Advisory Committee in order to provide community input prior to making the best possible judgment about the use of excess school property. The Committee is so named due to state legislative requirements of at least 7 but no more than 11 members.

On May 9, 2012, the Solano County Board of Education appointed 9 community members to a 7-11 Advisory Committee in order to provide recommendations on the disposition of the Gomer School site as potential surplus property.

The Committee is subject to the Brown Act and began its work at a publicly noticed meeting on June 11, 2012, at the Solano County Office of Education’s (SCOE) Boardroom. The members selected Mr. Michael Brimer as Chairman and Mr. David Marianno as Co-Chair of the Committee. Introductions, an overview of the 7-11 Committee’s purpose, a discussion of its duties, and subsequent meeting times and dates were reviewed. The Committee received and analyzed a detailed report from Solano County Office of Education (SCOE) staff that contained data including current enrollment, site locations, and program information.

A second meeting was publicly noticed and held on June 18, 2012, at the Gomer School site to allow members of the Committee to tour the property. After considerable discussion, action was taken to recommend to the SCOE Board of Education that the Gomer School site be recognized as surplus property.

Two additional meetings are scheduled for July 16, 2012, and July 23, 2012, both at 5 p.m. in SCOE’s Boardroom; second floor, 5100 Business Center Drive in Fairfield. On July 16, the Committee tentatively expects to work on setting priorities for the disposition or use of the property and may hold a Public Hearing on July 23. The 7-11 Committee invites the public to attend and welcomes community input.
