Solano Sheriff's Investigate Inmate Death at County Jail

A Vallejo resident died while in custody, sheriff's investigators are attempting to determine the cause

The Solano County Sheriff's Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of an imate who collapsed while in custody at the Solano County Jail.

On Monday, around 4 a.m., Vallejo Police officers brought Vallejo resident David Macedo, 35, into the jail on suspicion of a misemeanor charge of abusing the 911 system.

According to a Sheriff's Department press release, Macedo was "uncooperative and aggressive at the time of booking."

Guards placed Macedo in a holding cell in the receiving area of the jail for obervation according to the Sheriff's Department. Three hours later, at 7 a.m., Macedo lost consciousness and collapsed as correctional officers attempted to obtain his fingerprints.

"Jail medical personnel responded to the scene to begin providing medical treatment as Correctional Officers initiated CPR," the press release stated. "An ambulance was requested to transport Mr. Macedo to the hospital. Mr. Macedo was transported to the NorthBay Medical Center where he was pronounced dead."

Sheriff's investigators as well as those from the Solano County District Attorney's Office are currently investigating the incident.

"As with any in-custody death, the Sheriff’s Office also conducts an administrative investigation to verify that all policies and procedures were followed," the release said. "Mr. Macedo’s body was transported to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office, where an autopsy will be scheduled to determine the cause of Mr. Macedo’s death. No further questions regarding this investigation will be answered at this time."
