Dixon VFW Post Earns Three Prestigious Awards

Membership increases one factor in Post 8151 receiving three awards recently

Dixon Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander Brock McMahon has proudly returned from the state VFW convention with three awards.

At the convention last month in Ontario, Calif., with 800 members attending, Dixon VFW Post 8151 was designated an All-State Team post due to diligence in retaining membership, carrying out community service, and other activities such as the annual poppy drive.

Another award, in the form of a $300 check, was granted for attaining first place in membership recruitment in the post’s division in California. Over the past year Post 8151 has gained 10 new members for a total of 162. When McMahon became Commander in 2004, the post had only 84 members.

Finally, Post 8151 was given a National Recognition Award for outstanding citizenship education (Americanism) programs activities. The award is based on reports submitted to the VFW’s California Department. In Dixon’s case, the post held a flag retirement day, and encouraged greater use of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Commander McMahon, who has served as the group’s California chairman for community service and safety, looks forward to attending the national VFW convention in San Antonio in August. He is a Viet Nam and Desert Storm veteran, and has retired from the Air Force. However, he now works as a civilian as the Chief of Programs and Resources for the 60th Maintenance Group at Travis Air Force Base. Through personal contacts at the base, he has been able to find new members for Post 8151 there.

The VFW is the nation’s largest veterans’ group with 1.5 million members and over 7,600 posts. Locally, it shares Dixon’s new veterans’ hall with Dixon’s American Legion post.

Next year’s VFW state convention will be closer to home in Sacramento.
