Dixon High Says Bye to Black

Anyone who knows anything about Dixon High can tell you that black has been part of the school's uniforms for quite some time.

But in a move to take Dixon High School back to tradition, Principal John Barsotti has made the decision to exclude black as the main panel color of home uniforms.

Barsotti said that the school’s official colors are green and white, and black is an accent color. Barsotti said that the school will eventually replace the uniforms, but it will not happen soon because of lean financial times.

Accent colors will still be allowed on the uniforms, but Barsotti said that the colors on the main panels of the uniforms will be green or white. In addition, black will also be welcomed on school apparel, just not team uniforms.

The decision has upset some students at  

“I feel like its not really taking away a color, it’s more like taking away a part of our school identity,” said Sierra Graham, a 15-year-old sophomore at Dixon High. “The fact that he removed a school color is upsetting.”

Graham said that many of her classmates feel the same way, and some don’t know if the school can afford to replace the uniforms.

But some people in town remember when there was no black on the uniforms and green and white were the only colors representing Dixon. When black was first introduced to the school uniform, some raised concerns back then some said.

Some people see it as a return to tradition, others see it as a taking away from school pride.
